Hi all. I just bought a '64 Rapier Series IV. I know it's been SORN'd for years and recently recommissioned. Full service, tyres, rear brakes and MOT.
Having said that it still let me down this weekend, dirty fuel, and I had to repeatedly clean the carb to get it home. This done it goes like a dream, with good performance, but it has lead me to the conclusion that it has the wrong engine fitted.
Can anyone help me to identify what is in there?
The number stamped into the block is 6L102577N and doesn't follow the standard listings. It is a recon unit (sometime in the distant past) so not sure if the re-manufacturer has put his own numbering on it? It has a cast iron head, the dipstick goes into the block (not sump). There is a screw on canister oil filter, it has a Zenith 34 IV carb and single exhaust downpipe. I can't see any other marks on the block casting.
My thoughts are that it could be a 1725 from a Hillman Super Minx?
I'm hoping your vast wealth of knowledge can solve the mystery
Fingers crossed Paul

Hi Paul, Well done for picking a Rapier You don't say where the number you've given is stamped? I presume in front of the oil filter mounting plate towards the front of the engine. Series IV's would start with B330 or B331, depending if it is an early or late one. It does seem to be in the correct format for a later engine from an 'Arrow' range car. There was a '6L' series produced which had different prefixes as to whether it was a Hunter, or Sceptre, or Rapier (e.g. R5ABK 6L103917 is a Rapier chassis No., but likely prefix would be left off engine stamping). So I think you have a 1725cc unit there, from an 'Arrow' car - Hunter, Sceptre or Rapier, but with the CI head as you say. Not sure why they put that on? Maybe could not get a decent ali unit at the time? Hope that helps a bit. Cheers. G.

Thanks. I love the car and have already had many many nice comments. I've found a few more electrical items that need attention but it's as solid as a rock on the underside and runs really well.
I still keep trying to figure out the engine number. It doesn't correspond to chassis or the log book but it is a similar format to the 1725 on ebay (but with the CI head) So I think you may be right, it could be the lower powered version. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/172525665313?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
Thanks for the help and guidance - It would be nice to know but I intend to enjoy it for what it is.
Cheers Paul |
