Nice work, my block was silted up worse than yours and I can confirm that a good clean out and flush made a big difference to the cooling efficiency. Keep it up! |

Looks like youve got a bit of gardening to do with all that oil and dirt in the corner of the bulk head lol

New core plugs fitted, good job done;
Cross member is off & blasted;
And the steering column is out so the engine bay is totally clear;
Oh dear, look at all those wires!!

Engine rebuild looking good Jason, when are we gonna see BJU back on the road?
It sure is Dave, although slightly confusing considering they also have 1 litre bottles on sale for £7
And dare I set myself a target date, I keep failing them .
In all seriousness, Powderham was my target and I will give it a damn good go, but we have done considerably more work than we planned to. Factor in some undoubted glitches along the way and I will really have to go some to achieve that!
Sometime this year will be a result as far as I'm concerned and a final end to the saga!

Cheers Glen and thanks for the advice re sump gaskets.
Core plugs are already out, new ones might even be in too but I haven't had a progress report today!
You can see that the old ones were all worse for wear;
There was plenty of debris inside the block, which has now all been thoroughly flushed through so cooling efficiency should be considerably better now!
Sump came off yesterday, slight oil leak at the flywheel end will hopefully be cured by new seals;
Sump now nice and clean ready to go back on once both it and the block have been painted.
Found a bargain in Asda today, 4 lites of GTX for £10!!

Yes, got to do the core plugs Jason, but the only one I've known go in my 30 odd years of ownership is the one right at the back of the engine, so whilst its out it's a must! Great work there, I'm only just catching up. Zero progress on mine, but kack-hander work was underway until all stop due to illness. Cheers. G. |

Some concern today when we found some scores in the top of the block and some minor damage due to the headgasket being fitted upside down (?),
But after some huffing and puffing we managed to get it nice and smooth with some emery cloth.
Wasn't going to bother but it looks like we're going to have to remove the sump to cure a small oil leak at the flywheel end.
Core plugs are also going to be replaced for peace of mind.

The engine is pretty good but it'll look 10 times better with a fresh coat of paint

Some more progress to report.
Made the most of the good weather yesterday, with some help from the old man finally got the engine out;
Got it on the stand today;
And didn't take long to remove all bolt on bits and give it a quick clean;
Next few days will see it have a proper clean and then prep for a new coat of paint!!

Thanks Mark and no I wont be going out if there is the slightest hint of rain if I can help it!
Saying that though, you take your chances in this country whether it is January or August!!

Hi Jason. Gosh it's all looking pretty damned nice. You wouldn't want to drive it in the rain after doing all that work . On the subject of heads, i did it the other way round some years ago. I fitted a holbay head and webbers onto a standard 1725 block(using the holbay pushrods)in my brothers Hunter. The performance seemed to be on a par with my standard Holbay i was running at the time, only it was smoother (i guess with the standard cam making the difference) I would love to try it again just to see if my memory of it is correct. Looking forward to seeing you and BJU in the very near future.
Cheers dude Mark |

Another mini update, here's the fan blade and pulley;
And the air filter housing;
All nicely blasted and sprayed. Suspension will hopefully be re-assembled and re-fitted soon.
