Any advice on which oil to use in gearbox. the workshop manual says Shell X100 30, is there a modern equivalent recommended ?
thought I would drain out old and start again with a new fill up, if I can and clean out the filter while I'm at it.

any advice appreciated.

Hi Royston,

In the gearbox/overdrive the same oil is used as in the engine.
I use in my Rapier Castrol Classic XL 20W-50, don't use a modern oil with additives that are no good for old engines.

Regards,

Peter

Thanks Peter, now refilled and tested , but unfortunately it still "slides" out of gear when in top and engine speed matches wheel speed, totally unnoticed till I try to accelerate again.
I really hoped an oil change might solve it , sob sob

Hi Royston,

Is it sliding out of 4th gear or out of 4th plus overdrive?
Is it behaving the same way in all other gears? Makes it a difference if the overdrive is on? When it has slided out of gear and you are pushing it back in gear how is it behaving then? If you decelerate is it sliding out also?
I ask this questions in order to find out if there is synchromesh at fault or not.
When you mention "When in top and engine speed matches wheel speed" I don't get the picture quite well. Can you be a little more specific?

Regards,

Peter

The problem is only in 4th gear, and without overdrive. it typically happens after accelerating to 40 mph or so and then lifting foot from accelerator to cruise.I sometimes don't even notice it is out of gear until I come to accelerate again ( when engine revs freely )
It doesn't slip back in easily, not even with clutch fully depressed, a double declutch helps, so I can guess the synchro may be the problem, although there is never a problem changing up or down from 3rd to fourth under normal driving conditions.
Could the linkage be the problem ( he said hopefully ! )
Out of interest I am taking car out this Sunday for it's first real trip, to the meeting at the Plough in Riddle, near Deal. the pub is on the famous A258, which is listed as one of the best driving roads in England, a short 10 mile section of winding and undulating smooth surface road with spectacular sea views. Really looking forward to it.

Jumping out of gear can be caused by:

1.Loose/worn engine/gearbox mountings;
2.Worn/broken selector/synchronizer detent spring(s);
3.Badly worn synchronizer dog teeth;
4.Bent or worn selector fork or has come loose and lost its correct position;
5.Worn splines of selector sleeve and gear hub;
6.Shaft end float,play,broken thrust washers or another cause of unwanted movement;
7.Broken shift rail detent springs or detent ball jammed in gearbox casing;
8.Worn spigot bush (situated in flywheel).

I should start with checking the engine/gearbox mountings and then move over to check the selector mechanism.
I don't know how skilled you are in relation to overhauling the gearbox but if not then the specialist to consult in England is John Roseby. He offers too fully reconditoned gearboxes which are guaranteed for 6 months. If you want details how to reach him I can provide you with them.
