Just a small question I've seen 2 types in rostyle wheels..
I've got the opportunity to buy a set of these...

I've seen a rapier with these but not sure wether they'd be an original type or not.

Hi Thomas,

Yes, those single slot rostyles were fitted to the later H120's, I think they are Dunlop rostyles but I might be wrong.

The earlier cars have the 2 slot rostyles as you can see on my car.

Ford rostyles fit and are quite common but to find proper rootes ones is quite rare.

Thanks Jason,

I wasn't hoping on finding original H120 ones but you never know
and a spacer in between the wheel and the hub will sort it out nicely! ;)

BTW they're a steal as the guy selling 'em is only asking about €75 or about £60 i believe..

Many thanks,
Thomas

I heard them called Dunstyles, but not sure if that is an official term, probably just a nick-name hung on them.

A GLS at the NEC had Dunstyles one side and Rostyles the other, which was amusing. Only noticed since we were discussing tyre clearances - thought the Dunstyle looked slightly deeper dish than the quite shallow Rootes Rostyle, but maybe just a trick of the light. Hard to compare side to side without a steel rule!

They are indeed called dunstyle i have just come across a page in
the rootes manual that covers wheels

strangely enough when i took the rostyles off the fastback there was some washers packing the wheels off the front hubs will these be ford wheels ?

So last weekend I drove the 200 miles to pick them up.
Have heard before they're called dunstyles..

My granddad has Ford Rostyles on his rapier and they really need spacers especially in the rear because without spacers the brake drums force part of the lip outside..

They're not to bad, just some surface rust.. Gone have them blasted and than painted a nice silver before painting the rest black.

thats good to know thomas,
i am putting a ford back axle on so won't be a problem with the ford wheels, i wonder why the fronts where spaced ?

i have five half chrome cortina 1600e wheels as well if anybody is interested seems a shame to paint over the chrome spokes

My grand dad's are like you say yours are...
Chromed and painted..
But we've also fitted spacers in the front as the wheels otherwise touch on the bar going from the suspension arm to the front of the car on full lock... and maybe even on the strut towers...

Interesting.

I was thinking about fitting a set of 1600E Rostyles to the Hunter, they seems to fill the arch better than the Rootes ones.

Hello,

I've just checked the spare wheel on my car. It's slightly different.

How can I tell which is a genuine Roots Rostyle?

Thanks,

Mike

Mike,

The wheels shown above are the later type single slot rostyles that were fitted to the fastback. Earlier cars had a twin slot design as in the left hand wheel shown below. Ford 1600e also used similar wheels but the obvious difference is the dish of the wheel which is much deeper, see right hand picture below.

You can also see that the silver bit that points at the wheel nuts is shorter and broader on the rootes wheel.

One thing to watch out for on the rear axle is to check the surface of the drum before fitting. On mine one side had four lugs equally spaced around the hub about 6mm deep, whereas on the other side, the drum didn't have them. When I put the slot mags on I couldn't get a fit on the lugged side without interference so ended up having to swap the drum out for a flush fit version.

Can only think that the drums changed during the production run or a previous owner replaced it with one off of a different make of car maybe. Not sure if this will affect rostyles as the only set I've got came off of an A series Opel Manta and have a different pcd.

Thanks JPS.

The spare looks like the Ford type.

Now, where can I get a Rootes item?
