Hi guys
I have just got back from a long weekend away in Kent after going to my friends wedding and managing to coinside it with a photoshoot with Retrocars mag.
All i can say is WOW the cammera they use and the ability of the cameraman makes the car look really really good.
Anyway expect to see it in the magazine in 2 months time - should be a good one
ps the car covered over 700 miles this weekend, most of it at 75mph (thats measured by a satnav as speedo doesnt really work) and the car hasnt faulted - really impressed, however i have used about 1.5l of oil, is that normal??

The 1.5l oil you used, isn't that normal,
but it can happen..
When you're driving 75 MPH for a longer time, the oil gets hotter and thinner then normal.
So it could happen that when you have a small leak when driving around town, this leak gets bigger, because of the thinner oil...
We had it on our Triumph saloon MKI 2.5PI and it was just the oil ring in the timing cover.
So a small leak can leak harder when driving faster for a longer time because the oil gets thinner.

That's also the normal place for a Rapier to leak.
Have look at the timing cover behind the crank pulley if it's leaking there you will see that the bottom of the timing cover, the front of the sump and the crossmember are oily.
If the timing cover wasn't centralised properly around the crank pulley then the pulley will wear the cover and this gets you an oil leak. You cannot replace the oil seal because there isn't one!
I used to have to top up the oil every week (250 miles), after I fixed that leak it was every three months (3000 miles).
I cured the leak on mine by coating the crank pulley boss with silicone gasket then refitting it. As long as the timing cover is oily the silicone will not stick to the timing cover but will stick to that crank pulley (as long as you degrease it first).
Leave it for a few days then you will have leak proof crank pulley.
I know it doesn't sound like it would work - but mine has done thousands of miles. Saved me a small fortune in oil. I was worried that the silicone would break up and clog up the oil ways - but when I removed the timing cover (after several years) to check it was fine.

Forgot,
just generally check the engine for leaks.
Could come from a lot of places, actually...
The timing cover is just one possibility...
There's also
- the side cover
- where the distributor is fitted to the engine. (perhaps it leaks not that hard)
- between the engine and the oil-filter housing (there's presure on the oil that passes true there)
- the rocker cover
- the sump
our humber sceptre was, everytime, even after a short distance, leaking very hard...
Changed the rocker cover gasket, the side cover( and at the same time the distributor gasket and the oil-filter housing)
Solved the leaking!!!!

I will check the oiliness of those areas and take some pics too.
Im well chuffed u have a solution for this, although my local mill autos wont be so happy if i stop buying so much oil!!

Hey guys
I have next to me a copy of this months (June) Retrocars mag and im well chuffed. UMU has been featured and looks her best - Even the centre spread (once turned around) is of the Beam!!
It should be on sale in the next 2 or 3 days.

Only selected shops sell it, which can really prove annoying.
But the likely ones are WHSmiths, Morrisons, Martins newsagents, larger Asda, motorway services(usually)
You have until June 10th to get one, before next months is released, so still have plenty of time.
Yeah Tom, the latest addition was the DVD unit after my cd player stoped working. its blimmin ace and also looks bril when its turned off as its so simple and subtle.
