My 63 Series IIIa has a gear knob with a shift pattern embossed on top. It shows a standard H gate with reverse rear and to the left. The actual gearbox, however, has reverse rear and to the right...........I am confused.

Well that is easy to explain, original it should be as the knob shows and in that situation you have no synchromesh on first gear. When the reverse is on the right side it concerns a later gearbox with a synchronized first gear. So your original gearbox is swapped for a later gearbox (for instance a Rapier series IV a or a series V). Lucky you!

Regards,

Peter
